Birla Carbon North Bend Seawater Scrubber Project

Birla Carbon, a global leader in carbon-based solutions and a flagship business of the Aditya Birla Group, has implemented an innovative emission control project at its North Bend plant in Louisiana, USA. The objective was to significantly reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO₂) in accordance with state and federal air emission requirements. Through extensive research and innovation, the company introduced groundbreaking seawater scrubbing technology, a first-of-its-kind solution for reducing SO2 emissions from carbon black production in the U.S.A.

Project Goals and Challenges

The North Bend plant needed an effective emission control system that not only met regulatory requirements for SO2 emission reduction, but also minimized environmental impact. Traditional flue gas desulfurization (FGD) technologies typically require large volumes of chemical reagents like lime/limestone, which generate solid waste such as gypsum, and demand significant transportation and waste disposal efforts. These methods would have led to increased use of mineral resources, increased landfill use, increased transportation emissions, and undesired community disruption. Recognizing these challenges, Birla Carbon sought an alternative solution that would be more sustainable and efficient.

Seawater Scrubbing Technology

Seawater scrubbing of SO2, a method commonly used in power plants and marine applications, was identified as the ideal solution for reducing SO₂ emissions. The technology leverages the natural alkalinity of seawater from the adjacent Gulf Intercoastal Waterway to neutralize sulfur compounds and convert them into naturally occurring salts that are safely returned to the waterway. Unlike traditional FGD systems, this approach does not require the use of chemical reagents such as lime/limestone for the sulfur removal, and no solid waste is generated.

By implementing this innovative technology, the North Bend plant achieved a 95% reduction in annual SO₂ emissions. The seawater scrubbing process eliminated the need to dispose of the approximately 1.44 million pounds of gypsum waste per week that would have been generated by using traditional FGD technology for SO2 removal. This gypsum waste would then require storage, transportation, and disposal. Gypsum waste would burden local landfills, and the sheer amount would significantly reduce landfill lifespans by causing max allowable landfill yardage to be reached at a much faster rate than normal. Additionally, by avoiding the transport of raw materials and waste to and from the facility, the seawater scrubber did not add additional traffic to local roads that would have been needed to operate a traditional FGD unit. By not adding additional traffic North Bend did not increase emissions, congestion, and road wear in the surrounding community.

Environmental and Community Impact

The reduction of SO2 emissions from the North Bend facility has led to several environmental benefits, including improved air quality, reduced smog, lower acid rain formation, and a decline in nutrient pollution. Furthermore, the results of not increasing additional raw material and waste hauling to and from the facility are beneficial to local communities. The local impacts that were avoided were: trucking emissions, roadway disruptions for local businesses and residents, increased fuel usage, and increased landfill usage.   

Beyond the positive environmental impacts resulting from the operation of the seawater scrubber, the project also aligns with Birla Carbon’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). The North Bend team has actively engaged in community initiatives, including partnerships with organizations such as St. Mary Community Action Agency, Inc., and Chez Hope, supporting local families, low-income individuals, and disaster relief efforts.
