From heavy civil and marine construction to commercial diving and design-build solutions, Power Engineering Construction Co. has been tackling marine and heavy civil construction projects in California since 1986. With a legacy of successfully delivering some of the most complex construction and restoration projects on the West Coast, they have carved their name in the landscapes of California. But amidst their track record of success lies a deeper commitment – one to responsibility and sustainability.
Several of the industrial ports that Power Engineering has worked on play a critical role in the broader supply chain, ensuring that goods and people move efficiently. However, their heavy-duty equipment can have an impact on the climate. Recognizing the significance of being a responsible operator while continuing to help California upgrade its infrastructure, Power Engineering examined their solutions thoroughly and wanted to find a more sustainable fuel source to power their operations.
While California pushes for electrification of heavy-duty equipment, like the ones used in the marine and construction industries, Power Engineering faces the reality that full electrification is not yet feasible, particularly with the remote project sites they operate in. So renewable diesel, a drop-in solution with lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, meets Power Engineering’s needs.
That is why Power Engineering transitioned its entire harbor craft marine fuel supply and land-based equipment fleet to run on Neste MY Renewable Diesel in 2023, reducing their GHG emissions without having to spend additional time to transition. A leading producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) made from renewable raw materials, Neste’s renewable fuels are important solutions to reduce GHG emissions from heavy-duty industries such as construction and marine. The fuel can also be used immediately without any modifications to engines or investment in new equipment.
Driven by a vision to build not just for today but for generations to come, Power Engineering’s objective was to not only ensure compliance with dynamic regulations but also take proactive steps towards reducing its carbon footprint and fighting climate change.
The partnership between Power Engineering and Neste represents a scalable, actionable solution to one of the most pressing challenges in heavy-duty equipment: reducing reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining operational performance. The adoption of renewable diesel also aligns with regulatory trends and the increasing need for businesses to meet ESG goals and stringent emissions targets, which have been established by the California Air Resource Board (CARB). It provides a viable pathway for industries like freight, construction, and logistics to decarbonize without the need for significant modifications to existing engines or equipment.
The switch is already making a difference: Power Engineering used 48,354 gallons of Neste MY Renewable Diesel and reduced GHG emissions by up to 470 tons* in 2023, which is equal to the emissions from more than 1,000 passengers flying from Amsterdam to San Francisco**.
Together, Neste and Power Engineering are enabling customers to achieve their sustainability goals and laying the groundwork for a more resilient, lower-emission energy landscape that prioritizes people and the planet.
