Montrose and 'Client' have redefined emissions management with the deployment of an LDSN, delivering real-time, data-driven solutions that enhance process safety and sustainability. By integrating cutting-edge sensor technology with proprietary software, this innovation sets a benchmark for efficiency and environmental stewardship.”
E+E Leader Judge

Montrose Environmental Group deployed an innovative Leak Detection Sensor Network (LDSN) solution as an alternative to its existing LDAR program to reduce emissions in a Gulf Coast refinery (“Client”).

The Clean Air Act allows the EPA to establish alternative means of emission limitation (AMEL) for nonstandard leak detection monitoring systems. This federal law establishes emission limits from industrial facilities, including petroleum refineries, to reduce harmful air pollutants. This recent authorization empowers facilities to employ a more dynamic approach to their leak detection and repair (LDAR) program compliance through an LDSN.

Objectives

Montrose partnered with “Client” to deploy an innovative alternative to their existing LDAR program through the development of an LDSN. Driving the transformation was using new technology and approaches to effectively manage emissions and improve process safety.

Innovation

Key innovations of the LDSN include:

  • Real-time sensors to continuously monitor for leaks 24/7; and
  • Use of the company’s proprietary software, Sensible EDP™, an environmental data platform that aggregates real-time sensor data and sends alerts. This cloud-based software platform advances sustainability, energy efficiency, and operational excellence by capturing and processing environmental data from air, water, and soil sensors.

Impact

The deployment of an LDSN is an alternative to LDAR. This solution provides real-time actionable data, manages emissions more effectively, and improves process safety.

Key outcomes of the LDSN included:

  • 24/7, real-time sensor data.
  • Collection of historical data to improve future operations.
  • Early detection of elevated emissions.
  • Improved safety and community air quality.

Montrose’s comprehensive LDSN solution leverages innovative technology to improve repair times, process safety, and ultimately reduce emissions.

Through the deployment of an LDSN, the “Client” solidified its commitment to safety for its employees and the community. Early detection of elevated emissions reduces the overall emissions at its refinery. Montrose’s LDSN allows the “Client” to detect emissions sooner than conventional methods and make repairs faster, resulting in safer work conditions within its facility and improved air quality for the surrounding communities.
